Gibault students ‘adopt’ graduate serving in Iraq
On Jan. 30, students from the junior class at Gibault Catholic High School brought items to the school’s campus ministry office to be shipped to Army 1st Lt. Casey Eckert, a 2000 graduate of the school. His unit, the 41st
Engineering Battalion is also receiving the care packages during their deployment to Iraq.
A graduate of the Army ROTC program at the University of Missouri in Rolla, with his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Eckert is responsible for road surveillance in Iraq. This means he searches for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) before they can damage or destroy convoys traveling through the country.
Since his deployment in September, six care packages have been shipped to Eckert and his unit. With no particular theme, the care packages include a variety of items, from toys and candy for the Iraqi children to personal letters from the students at Gibault.
The next package from the junior class is due to be shipped in February.
