Carolyn Joy Haege, nee Brown, 73, of Freeburg, born Nov. 7, 1934, in Wayne City, died Nov. 2, 2008, at the home of her son, Gregg, in Freeburg.
At the age of six months, Carolyn moved with her family to East St. Louis where she attended East St. Louis Senior High School. Following graduation in June of 1951, Carolyn worked as a private secretary. She married Clarence
D. Haege Feb. 2, 1952.
Carolyn’s employment stopped with the birth of their first son, Gregg Eugene, on May 26, 1958. In September 1958, Clarence began his teaching career and, in January 1959, was called as bi-vocational pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Freeburg. The Haeges have lived in Freeburg since that time. A second son, Alan Phillip, was born to Dr. and Mrs. Haege on July 21, 1965.
For over 15 years, Carolyn worked at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, as the design consultant for their Christmas Tree Room and Easter Room. Both she and Clarence also did volunteer work there.
Carolyn was a wife and mother, private secretary, pastor’s wife, school superintendent’s wife, design consultant, and.grandmother. They have both been blessed with friends throughout southern Illinois, through Carolyn’s work at the shrine, and through Clarence’s places of service in education as a teacher in various locations.
Mrs. Haege was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel D. and Dora P., nee Shelton, Brown.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Dr. Clarence D. Haege of Freeburg; two sons, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Gregg Eugene (Sandi) Haege and Alan Phillip Haege, both of Freeburg; three granddaughters, Alexis Haege of Freeburg, and Victoria and Mary Caitlyn Haege of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a former daughter-in-law, Melinda Lee Haege of Murfreesboro; and Carolyn’s stepmother, Katreen “Katie” Brown of Belleville.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Freeburg, IL; to the First Baptist Church of Belleville; or to Heartland Hospice. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Freeburg.
Burial will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Freeburg.
Loretta Szczepanski, 84 of Carlyle, died on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.
Loretta was a member of St. Mary’s Church. She was the housekeeper at church rectories at St. Joseph’s in Cobden and St. Theresa’s in Salem before going to St. Mary’s in Carlye. She worked in this capacity for 42 years before retiring.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at St. Mary’s Chur
ch in Carlyle with Father George Mauck, officiating.
Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Zieren Day Funeral Home on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Loretta may be made to St. Mary’s Church, Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the charity of the donor’s choice and will be received at the funeral home.

Brother Franics X. Sullivan, OMI, died Oct. 26 at St. Henry’s Oblate Residence in Belleville. He was 75.
Brother Sullivan was born in Springfield, Mass. In 1950 he joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, making his profession of vows at Godrey, Ill.
During his 58 years of religious life, he served the community in many capacities. In the Diocese of Belleville he was a staff member of the Victorious Missionaries at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, Belleville. He was an associate at Immaculate Conception in Centreville. and St. Philip’s in East St. Louis.

As director of the Victorious Missionaries, a ministry program at the Shrine these last several years, he became very active in seeing to the implementation of the “American with Disabilities Act” and promoting the beatification of Father John Maronic, OMI.
He is survived by a sister Joan Wheeler.
The funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 1 at the Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville. Burial was in the Oblate cemetery on the grounds of St. Henry’s.
