Father Henry Fischer dies June 3 in Belleville
Father Henry J. Fischer, 67, died June 3 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville.
He had been pastor of St. Cecilia Parish in Bartelso since 1999.
A Mass of Christian Burial was scheduled to be celebrated today, Thursday, at the parish church.
Father Fischer was ordained by Bishop Albert Zuroweste June 5, 1971.
Before ordination, he attended St. Henry Seminary in Belleville and finished his studies at St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Ill., with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and a master’s degree in Divine Theology.
After ordination, Father Fischer was assigned as associate at St. Peter Cathedral for about six months and then in December 1971 to St. Mary Parish, both in Belleville.
In 1976 he was assigned pastor of St. Mary in Mound City, to St. Catherine in Grand Chain and the former Our Lady of Fatima in Ullin.
In 1982 he was assigned as pastor to St. Joseph Parish in Freeburg, where present pastor, Father Mark Reyling, said the people really loved him, and in 199 he went to St. Cecilia Parish in Bartelso.
In March 2012 he was named Vicar Forane of the North Central Deanery.
He also served as chaplain of the Bartelso Volunteer Fire Department, treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Clergymen’s Aid Society.
He was born June 26, 1945 in Highland, Ill., to Henry and Elizabeth Nordman Fischer, who preceded him in death as well as brother-in-law, Larry Theising and two nephews.
Surviving are his siblings: Joan Theising and Rita (Frank) Nordhaus, both of Germantown; Father Adrian Fischer OFM of Monroe, La.; David (Bonnie) Fischer of Trenton; and Paul (Linda) Fischer of Collinsville, Ill.
Interment was planned to be at St. Mary Cemetery in Trenton.
