After 47 years as a coach, teacher, administrator, mentor and sometimes the janitor at Althoff Catholic High School, Coach Glenn Schott announced his retirement Nov. 20 at a press conference at the school.

The coach’s voice caught and he struggled to keep his composure as he spoke to faculty, staff and the press about some of his most memorable moments on and off the field.

He spent 37 years as head football coach at the school where his teams qualified 16 times for state finals.
Although, the coach said he wanted “to go out under the radar,” principal, David Harris would not let that happen.

“For 47 years Glenn has spent his life doing exactly what makes him happy, and that is providing a Catholic education to the students in our diocese,” Dave Harris said.

During his remarks, the coach thanked numerous people, including the coaches who worked with him during the years.

“I always surrounded myself with good coaches,” he said, and many of them attended the press conference.
“You can’t pay people what they’re worth, but I’ve been blessed with some pretty good coaches,” he said.

The coach said he thought about retiring last year to spend more time with his family, but decided to wait.
“I enjoyed every minute here,” he said, “the coaching and the kids, but the most important thing is these kids.”

Principal Harris, also at one time a coach, said the coach’s example to the students has been important.
“Glenn is a true role model, not only for our students but for all the people he has come in contact with over the years,” the principal said.

Asked to name the best team he ever coached, he named the “special team of 1980, but probably the most talented was the 1990 team.” Expanding on the topic, he added: “Probably the team that over achieved was the 1989 team.”
