Chester resident celebrates 100 years

Dolores Clendenin, a lifelong member of Mary Help of Christians Parish in Chester, celebrated her 100th birthday on Sept. 14th.

She was born Sept. 14, 1911 in Chester to Andrew and Susanna Sidick, who were also lifelong members of the parish.

She was baptized, confirmed, and made her solemn communion at Mary Help of Christians Church.

Dolores attended all eight years of grade school at St. Mary’s School, graduating in 1926.

She then attended 4 years at Chester High School and graduated from there in 1930.

At the age of 20, Dolores married Arkell Clendenin and they had six children.
She worked hard throughout the years raising her family and enjoyed watching them grow.

After her youngest child left home, she worked as a retail clerk at Lot-O-Savings Department Store in Chester for 10 years.

Dolores is a kind, patient and devout person. She has always relied on her faith and her church to keep her going. No matter what you do for her, she always smiles and says “thank you.”

Dolores’ husband, Arkell Clendenin, passed away in April of 1993. She has two deceased children, Carole Jean Clendenin and Bonita Sue Young.

She has four living children, Bob Clendenin of Belleville, Ken Clendenin of Brandenburg, Ky., Mary Moeller of Chester and Brenda Prost of Steeleville.

She has 18 living grandchildren and two deceased grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 40 great-great grandchildren.

Dolores now lives at the Chester Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 770 State St., Room 124 in Chester.
She might appreciate a note congratulating her on beginning her 101st year of life.
