Father lloyd p. misho dies july 31
Father Lloyd P. Misho, 80, of Belleville, born Feb. 10, 1929, in Blytheville, Ark., died on Friday, July 31, 2009, at Lebanon Care Center in Lebanon.
After graduating from Chaminade High School in Clayton, Mo., Father Misho played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
He entered the Society of Mary and professed vows as a Marianist in 1949. He taught and coached at the former Cathedral High School in Belleville.
Later, he studied for the diocesan priesthood and May 27, 1958 Bishop Albert R. Zuroweste ordained him a priest for the diocese.
Father Misho served at Sacred Heart Parish in Du Quoin, St. Mary Parish in Mt. Carmel, St. Clare Parish in O’Fallon, St. Phillip’s in East St. Louis, Immaculate Conception Parish in Centreville and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Herrin.
He was also a teacher at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville and Mater Dei Catholic High School in Breese.
In June 1966, he became pastor of St. Felicitas in Beaver Prairie and St. Teresa of Avila in Marydale.
Bishop Stanley Schlarman, principal celebrant and homilist at Father Misho’s funeral liturgy, said his path crossed with Father Misho’s while both were teaching at Mater Dei. Father Misho taught two religion classes at the high school.
Later, he served as pastor at St. Mary in Valmeyer, St. Mary Magdalen in Todd’s Mill, St. Lawrence in Sandoval, Holy Rosary in Fairmont City, and Sacred Heart in Dupo. His last assignment was as senior associate pastor at St. Augustine of Canterbury, Belleville.
Retiring due to ill health in 1988, Father Misho assisted at St. Joseph Parish in Clayton, Mo., until beginning residency at the Hincke-Sense Priest Retirement Home in Belleville in 1990. Since 2002 he has been in residence at the Lebanon Care Center in Lebanon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl Melbrite Misho and a brother, John Misho.
Surviving is one brother, Omar Misho of Traverse City, Mich.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Aug. 3 at St. Augustine of Canterbury in Belleville, with Bishop Edward K. Braxton presiding. Bishop Stanley Schlarman was the principal celebrant and homilist and the priests of the Belleville diocese concelebrated.
In his homily, Bishop Schlarman said: “If anything, I noticed a definite ‘gentling down’ these latest years from the Lloyd we all knew in the past.”
Interment was in Greenmount Catholic Cemetery in Belleville. (No photo was available.)
