Mater Dei Catholic High School Lady Knights placed fourth in the state in 3A softball.

They were ecstatic to be going to state since it didn’t look all that promising at the beginning of the season.

“They never gave up,” Coach Deb Foote said. “No matter who they played, they thought they could win.”
Pitcher Heather Deering said the team gelled and played better later in the season.

At the end, “it was great to bring that trophy home,” Deering said.

Right-fielder Lacey Albers said the team tried to go as far as it could every year, and this year the team made it to state.

“We had some really tough games,” Albers said, with one game going into extra innings before the Lady Knights pulled out a win.

A senior, Albers said she enjoyed every minute of the play because she knew this would be her last season of softball.

Coming back next year, Alexa Becker, the team’s shortstop said she had a great time, and she had a bird’s eye view of all the action.

“It was fun and exciting for the fans and the players,” she said.

All of the people interviewed said the beginning of the season was a time for the girls to “find” themselves.
“After the first couple of games we started playing ball,” Becker said.
