New altar dedicated at St. Damian Parish

Parishioners at St. Damian in Damiansville gathered June 26 at their 8:30 a.m. parish liturgy to witness the dedication of their new altar at the church.

Bishop Edward K. Braxton was chief celebrant and homilist at the liturgy which was also part of his Parish Pastoral Visitation to St. Damian.

The altar, which was handcrafted by parishioner, Pete Toennies, this year, was one of the new pieces in the church which has undergone renovations in the last few months.

Toennies also created the large crucifix, Altar of Repose for the tabernacle and the ambry for the holy oils.

Another parishioner, Dominic Ribbing, who is employed by Wiegmann Woodworking, crafted the ambo to proclaim the sacred Scripture and the presider chairs. All were made of red oak.

Jason Toennies coordinated the black granite on the altar and the top rail of the ambo.

The bishop poured ample amounts of the Oil of Chrism on the altar as part of the dedication. He also incensed the altar, as well as the pastor, Msgr. Donald Eichenseer and the people.
