Getting a “hands on” experience takes on new meaning for young people who sign up for art camp at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville.

This year, nine youth joined Althoff’s art teacher, Dave Woesthaus, to “dig in” to the clay and create some one-of-a-kind art projects.

Going on for 16 years, Woesthaus knows the camp is fun for the youth, and some of them enroll in Althoff to study art and “a handful go on to be art majors in college,” he said.

The camp continues to be fun for Woesthaus as well.
“It’s really fun to see the kids doing things they thought were impossible,” he said.

Adults could go to camp in the evening too. “They made so much stuff,” Woesthaus said he expected to be “firing” their creations for hours.

The camp is run for two weeks during the summer.
Students this year came from a number of parishes, including Queen of Peace, St. Theresa’s and Blessed Sacrament in Belleville and St. Clare in O’Fallon and Corpus Christi in Shiloh.

For more information about the art program or the curriculum at Althoff, please call 235-1100. Mater Dei Catholic High School also runs summer camps. For information, please call 526-7216.
