Immaculate Conception in Columbia scheduled
to break ground for new church June 24
Immaculate Conception Parish in Columbia will break ground for a new Catholic church, at 6 p.m. June 24.
In keeping with the theme of the project, all are welcome to bring shovels to participate.
To reach the bluff side location, take old Route 3 to Quarry Road, to Palmer Road. Construction of the church begins this summer, with a projected completion late in 2012.
This solemn event will be presided by Bishop Edward K. Braxton with Msgr. Carl Scherrer, pastor, the building committee, parish leaders and local dignitaries.
The parish’s current church, built in the 1860s, was expanded and remodeled several times through the years, but 21st century needs finally outgrew the 19th century building. A growing community made a larger structure essential.
For the past 15 years, hundreds of volunteers worked for seven years developing the current project. The new church marks the first step in a comprehensive, long-range plan for new parish facilities.
A five-million-dollar fund-raising campaign to finance the initial costs succeeded despite the recession.
