A local arm of the American Cancer Society recognized the efforts of two diocesan Catholic elementary schools recently.

St. Teresa and St. Clare schools in Belleville and O’Fallon respectively were given a plaque recognizing their contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Each of the schools participated in an Origami project to make 1,000 paper cranes for the Cancer Society and raise money at the same time.

At St. Teresa’s students donated the proceeds from a St. Patrick’s Day carnival to the Cancer Society.

Eighth-grader Lauren Potje said it wasn’t difficult to identify with people who suffer with cancer since two teachers were stricken with the disease.

“It’s more meaningful when you know people,” Lauren said.

Through student efforts, $1,000 was donated to the Cancer Society.

At St. Clare School members of the junior high school St. Vincent de Paul Society made the cranes and donated them to the Cancer Society.
