catholic social services names 2010 christian faith award winners
The Metro-East Region of Catholic Social Services (CSS) announced the selection of the 2010 Christian Service Award winners. They are: Helen Fiedler, a long-time member and eucharistic minister of St. Teresa Parish in Belleville; Pastor Kendall Granger of the New Life Community Church in East St. Louis; Father Osang Idagbo, administrator of SS. Peter & Paul Parish in Waterloo; and Pastor Camilla Weatherall of the Deliverance Mission Christian Church in Belleville. Each of the winners was nominated by numerous individuals and each will be honored for their individual accomplishments.
The award recipients will be formally recognized at a benefit dinner beginning at 6 p.m. April 30 at Albert’s Banquet Center in Belleville.
Reservation deadline is April 23. Anyone interested in attending the event should call 394-5900. Dinner Reservations are: $45 per person, or $400 for a table of ten, or $320 for a table of eight. Walks-ins only if space is available.
Each person selected reflects the mission and spirit of Catholic Social Services through their contributions in one or more of the following areas: faith-related service; community service; youth mentoring; advocacy; direct service to those in need; activity in community organizations, volunteerism, and/or fundraising. Following is a brief quote about each of this year’s Metro-East recipients:
• Helen Fiedler has worked on virtually every parish organization and committee and has served, and continues to serve, in a wide variety of area charities, including Red Cross blood drives, Belleville Sister Cities, the American Heart Association, and various food pantry and clothing drives. For more than 30 years Helen has been the face of St. Teresa’s, never heard, but always seen, giving her time to help at St. Teresa’s and in the community.
• Pastor Kendall Granger is a community leader in East St. Louis. A native of East Saint Louis, Pastor Granger founded the New Life Community Church by at the age of 28 with 12 members. To-date the congregation has grown to over 850 members.
• Father Osang Idagbo works with the children and young people of SS. Peter and Paul. He came to the United States from Nigeria, and Bishop Edward K. Braxton assigned him as administrator to the Waterloo parish. He quickly stepped up to the challenge of ministering to a very large parish. His interaction with the school students and his support of the youth ministry program are proving to be very beneficial to the entire community.
• Pastor Camilla Weatherall is an educator and also a pastor at the Deliverance Mission Christian Church. She is a bi-vocational pastor who has committed her entire life not only to preaching and teaching God’s word but living every day as an example and mentor. Pastor Camilla said: “Your situation is a stepping stone; step on, step off.” When Pastor Camilla uses this quote she is essentially motivating women and men who have fallen on rough times. She wants them to know that it is only a “step away” from a better situation.
