Seventh-graders at Queen of Peace School in Belleville held a homeroom auction in February to raise money for a group — NETwork Against Malaria — that provides “bednets” to protect people in Uganda from malaria.
The entire school is involved in the project with each class having a piggy bank in the shape of a bed with a malaria net for protection. At left, seventh-grade teacher Connie Yordy, shakes out money to prepare for the auction.
Students raised $413.44 at the auction with some students donating the money in their pockets if they had not spent it during the auction, Connie Yordy said.
The items were donated by the class, and then during homeroom, they bid on the items which included snacks, new and some “gently used” toys and games.
Besides raising money, the students are learning about the costs of malaria in the Third World.
“In Uganda one child dies every five minutes from malaria,” according to information from Madelyn McGlynn, parishioner and parent at Queen of Peace. “We want to help the children of Uganda,” she said.
Money will go to the Hoima diocese, which is also the home of Father Christopher Mujule, who is ministering at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Metropolis.
