At St. Clare Parish in O'Fallon, the Earth Concerns Committee will host an “Awakening the Dreamer” Symposium, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 2. Symposium organizers suggested participants could be “startled” into a new awareness of the world around them. After the Symposium they might wonder why it took them so long to see the world differently.

The Symposium was created to change the dream of the modern world, a dream of consumption, competition and acquisition, to one of sustainability, justice and peace, staffers at St. Clare said. The ideas grew out of an alliance between the indigenous people of Ecuador and some North Americans who viewed the world differently and chose to do something about it.

The Symposium is an interactive workshop designed to inspire participants to play a role in creating an alternative future: an “environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just human presence on this planet.”
It does not proselytize. Rather, it simply presents facts about what the situation is in today’s world and how it came to be. It then helps participants explore their own experiences to imagine different options for the future.

Fee for the day is $15 and includes a soup and salad lunch that will be made from locally grown foods.
