Kujenga teaches youth more than Swahili

“We all need to know about our roots,” Bishop Wilton Gregory told the more than 100 young African Americans and their adult sponsors Oct. 4 at Kujenga at the shrine.

The word “Kujenga” means “leadership,” Father Ferd Cheri, OFM, said. The weekend is based on seven values of unity, self determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, creativity, purpose and faith.

The weekend is important, Father Cheri said, because it provides a time for quiet reflection, for learning, for faith formation, and it gives young people a place that is safe and fun.
