making sure the numbers add up: diocesan employee shines at conference

If numbers make you yawn, and you’re not sure what the best way to deal with a budget and internal controls is, the Diocese of Belleville has the “go-to” person on board: Carol Wiegmann, diocesan auditor.

Not only does Wiegmann go throughout the diocese “checking the books,” last fall she was one of the featured speakers at a national gathering of fiscal managers where 141 dioceses were represented.

Her topic: “Instituting Compensating Controls in Limited Segregation Situations and Controls over Cash.” The session examined alternatives to segregation of duties for parishes and diocesan agency offices that are limited in staff size.

In addition to providing suggestions for segregation of duties to achieve tighter internal controls, this session explored proven techniques to maximize control over cash during normal daily operation, offertory collection and counting, and fundraising events held in parishes and schools.
