father robert gore dies jan. 20 in belleville

Father Robert D. Gore, 72, of Belleville, Ill, born January 22, 1938, in St. Louis, Mo, died Thursday, Jan. 20 at Four Fountains Convalescent Center in Belleville.
Father Gore attended Our Lady of the Snows Seminary in Pass Christian, Miss., and St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana.
He was ordained May 1, 1965, at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Belleville by the Most Rev. Albert R. Zuroweste, Bishop of Belleville.
Father Gore’s first assignment was as associate pastor at Holy Childhood Parish in Mascoutah.
In 1970 he was appointed associate at St. Mary Parish in Centralia (also serving as chaplain at St. Mary Hospital), followed by pastorate assignments at St. Mary in Mound City, St. Catherine in Grand Chain, and Our Lady of Fatima in Ullin.
Father Gore served as chaplain of Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon (1976-1981) and the next year as chaplain of St. Clement Hospital in Red Bud.
He was pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in DuBois, from 1982 to 1988, followed by short assignments as temporary chaplain at St. Mary Hospital in Centralia, and St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro.
Later assignments included pastor of St. Francis of Assisi in Aviston; temporary administrator at St. Liborius in St. Libory; associate pastor at St. Teresa in Belleville; friar for the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Bishop Janssen General Assembly 0199; and chaplain at the Poor Clare Monastery, the Diocesan Ministry to the Sick and Aged, and the Meredith Home in Belleville.
In 2006, Father Gore was appointed pastor of St. Augustine of Canterbury Parish in Hecker, where he served until his retirement Aug. 2, 2010.
Father Gore was preceded in death by his parents, Donald B. Sr. and Cornelia Fellner Gore.
Surviving are his brother, Donald B. (Judith) Gore of Alton, Ill.; his sister, Mary Frances Gore of Belleville; a niece, Cindy (Rick) Healey of Godfrey, Ill.; two nephews, Michael and Daniel Gore of Alton; great-nieces and a great-nephew.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 24 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Hecker with Bishop Edward K. Braxton the principal celebrant.
Burial was at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery in Belleville.
